Acclamation of Amador Bueno 1641

Synopsis
The acclamation of Amador Bueno was an episode that took place in the captaincy of S. Paulo, following the acclamation of the new king João IV. The large community of Spaniards living there saw in the Portuguese independence a serious setback for their economic interests. As such, they wrapped a secret plan to elect a local king while waiting for reinforcements from Buenos Aires. They chose Amador Bueno, a member of the local nobility, respected for his role in the public life of the city. His refusal led the population into a riot. The crowd ran after him, shouting ‘Viva Amador Bueno, nosso rei’, to what he answered: “viva o senhor João IV, nosso rei e senhor!”. After seeking refuge in a monastery, he explained to the crowd how the kingdom was now ruled by the house of Braganza. They repented and swore obedience to João IV, including the Spaniards present. It is important to note that there is an ongoing historiographical debate about whether this episode really happened or if it is just a political construct. The idea that the acclamation never took place is based, in part, on the fact that there is only one written account of the event and no other sources mention it.
