Esquilache riots, replicas 1766

Synopsis
Replicating the popular revolt in Madrid, the Esquilache Riots extended through a wide territorial scope beyond the capital of the Spanish Monarchy into other cities. It exploded in Seville and Jaén in Andalusia, and in Oviedo in the north; it replicated especially in towns on the route between Valencia in the coast, where there was export and later import of grain, and where artisans and peasants protested in front of the local authorities and even revolted against the liberalization of grain markets and the scarcity of bread. The elaboration of pasquinades followed for several weeks. Finally, popular unrest in Barcelona expressed itself in calls for the summoning of the “plebs”, yet the revolt was quickly curtailed by a combined intervention of the Capitán General and the gild organization of the city.
