Ferrol riots 1810

Synopsis
On February 10, 1810, a riot occurred in Ferrol. The event was a product of a context of social and economic crisis in the town, without any evidence of political proclamations or motivations. The riot culminated in the assassination of governor José de Vargas y Varáez, at the hands of the widow Antonia de Alarcón. After a trial in January 1811, the carpenter Benito Agustín López was sentenced to ten years in prison in Africa; Agustina García, single, was sentenced to four years in prison and six years in exile; and Antonia de Alarcón was sentenced to hanging and beheading. These events contrast with the Cádiz riot of 1809, in which the death sentences of four defendants were commuted to ten years in prison.
