Huarochiri uprising 1750

Synopsis
On the night of July 25, 1750, Huarochirí’s church bells signaled the start of an indigenous insurgency sparked by discontent over the mita, head tax and corregidores’ abuses. The insurgents had ties with an aborted uprising discovered in Lima on June 26, 1750 and decided to take action before it was too late. They set the fire to the cabildo, killing most the Spanish authorities who had gathered inside the building, including several soldiers, the corregidor of Huarochirí at the time and his predecessor. Those who managed to escape the flames were murdered. The leaders managed to gain support from part of the indigenous authorities and more than 400 rebels in the province, but 500 men were sent from Lima to put an end to the uprising. Seven leaders were executed on August 17, and other key members were sentenced to beatings. The viceroy Manso de Velasco issued a general pardon for the province.
