Anti-liberal violence in Madrid 1825

Synopsis
During the morning of July 16th, 1825 there were rumors that several regiments of Voluntarios Realistas (Royalist volunteers, the popular militia in favor of absolutist rule) had died after being poisoned by "negros" (as Liberals were named in the reactionary jargon) inside the administration. Groups of volunteers run through the streets of Madrid for the rest of the day with their sables shouting death to the "negros" and threatening pedestrians. At night they entered different private houses and bars and harassed individuals denounced as "negros". Events continued on the next day, causing several deaths and countless beatings, harassments and aggressions, unleashing chaos and confusion in the streets of the capital without reaction by the authorities. The incident remained in the collective memory of the populace for years long. The mobilization was not against the authorities in power but rather in favor of the status quo; yet it not only featured subaltern participants but was relatively autonomous from instititutions and decision-making from above.
