Jamancia, Barcelona 1843

Synopsis
After the liberal victory in the First Carlist War (1840), Catalonia continued to be the scene of bullangas. On 13 August 1843, a radical progressive insurrection broke out in Barcelona against the new Spanish government that emerged after the fall of General Espartero, the regent of Isabel II. The failure of the new government in Madrid to fulfil its promises led to an insurrection led by the Barcelona juntista movement, which was joined by other Spanish cities, as well as broad sectors of the workers, such as artisans, journeymen and factory workers. It was an insurrection that highlighted the existence of an alternative progressive liberalism, of a radical, federal and revolutionary type. The Jamancia is considered to be the last bullanga, that is, the episode that closed the cycle of liberal revolutions in Spain. Its main demand was the convening of a Junta Central, an institution parallel to the government which, according to the juntist movement, embodied true Spanish national sovereignty. Repression was fierce. Barcelona was bombarded by General Prim from the Citadel and from Montjuic until the city signed its surrender on 19 November. The repression, however, was to last for months (arrests, executions, purging of institutions, etc.). This was the beginning of a period of liquidation of radical progressivism, known in historiography as the Moderate Decade.
