Our Father revolt 1666

Synopsis
Our Father Revolt was a revolt against the governor of Pernambuco, who was deposed, arrested and sent back to Lisbon by the Municipal Council of Olinda with the support of local elites, mainly plantation owners (senhores de engenho). Pernambuco had been a breeding ground for a very exclusivist, if not nativist, elite, who taught of itself as the legitimate heiress of the original colonization effort led by a donatary family. The war against the Dutch (1630-1654), in which this elite played a decisive role, only made it more entrenched and more jealous of its autonomy. The conspirators, accustomed to have one of their own as governor, felt slighted with the nomination of Jerónimo de Mendonça, a complete outsider from Iberia. Furthermore, the actions of the governor were frequently against the interests of the plantation owners and sometimes unlawful, minting coins in his own house, sequestering goods and proceeding to illegitimate imprisonments, among other things. The revolt, like many others between 1640 and 1680, went unpunished, but rapidly became a milestone in the regional history of Pernambuco.
