Vic riots 1640

Synopsis
Two weeks after the destruction of Santa Coloma de Farners at the hands of the Spanish tercios, the inhabitants of Vic rioted in the town and took up arms against the royal ministers and officials. On the same day, peasants from the outskirts stormed the city to support the rioters in their protest against billeting and military repression. On this occasion, unlike in Girona, the popular violence also extended to the local authorities, who were accused of collaborating with the crown in the billeting of soldiers in Catalonia. On 26 May 1640, the mob stormed the house of the nobleman Miquel Joan Granollachs, accused of sheltering a member of the Royal Council of Catalonia (Bernat Ponts), and the house of the mayor of Vic, Antoni Illa, who was eventually murdered. The next day, the mutineers left the city to join the war against the soldiers, who at that time were already considered sacrilegious. During the month of June, however, there were new riots in Vic, led by foreigners who burst into the city in search of "traitors". On 10 and 11 June, for example, a group of reapers entered Vic and burnt the houses of four Catalan nobles, accused of collaborating with the enemy. The anti-military protest had taken on anti-nobility overtones; as well as lashing out against the crown, the population was also rebelling against poverty.
